U.S.S. Atlantis - Step 18.5, Fabricating Warp Engine Domes.
OK, so one thing I don't like about the U.S.S Atlantis kit is that the warp engines just don't look right. Any Trekkie will no doubt remember that warp engines have are supposed to have a rounded front end right? So why didn't estes give as a nice vacuformed front for our warp drives instead of the flat discs shown in step 18? My solution: These wooden marbles I found at Michael's Craft Store...
The 5/8" size was the closest match to the warp tube O.D. from the sizes available.
When cut in half, they will make nice rounded front pieces for the warp drives and go a long way to improving the overall look of the finished kit.
Because they are wood, and therefore a little pourous, I decided to shoot them with a primer coat first. Actually, at this point, after the primer had dried, I shot them with Krylon "Pumpkin Orange". However, the Orange didn't really "pop" like I wanted it to, so I went back to Ace hardware and picked up a can of White primer and re-shot them... So this picture is a bit misleading.
As can be seen in the above picture, the white undercoat really makes the orange nice and bright. Now we are ready to start adding all those parts we'd been skipping past waiting for the final white paint coat to go on. So in the next step we will finally attach the main deck.
